for remembering: Postcards
Since 1875 (a few years after
their invention) printed postcards could be mailed
with reduced postage worldwide, superseeding the
photoprints tourists used to by in the decades before.
Postcards show "sights",
so most postcards look just like the photos in travel
brochures ("Tourism is the industry where
its production is identical with its advertising."
(Enzensberger)).
The stages of the development
of tourism can be found in the postcards too: From
early plain reporting of the favorable views of
a place to longing for the bygone times in nostalgic
and artistic postcards to self-mocking postcards
about the expected tourist experience (multiple-choice-postcards,
"Berlin by night"-All-black-postcards)
A large proportion of postcards
are not bought to send them off, but to keep as
idealized portraits of the places visited, with
less intrusion of possible real-life disturbances
then in photos taken by the tourists themselves.
