Self-Actualization through
Leisure and Tourism activities
Self-Actualization, the creation
of Self-Identity in post-modern societies has to
find new ways:
In a world
where nobody particularly cares about your religion,
your ethnicity, your occupation, your address, or
your politics, how do you form an identity?
In a world
where ascribed identities (Protestants are better
than catholics) have become passe, people are turning
to acquired ones (people who drive Porsches are
more interesting than people who drive Opel).
In a world
where acquired material objects are continuously
deflated in importance by wider availability, people
are turning to acquired activities (people who go
rafting in South America are more interesting than
people who travel to Lanzarote).
Increasingly activities like leisure
and tourism serve as important "marker"
of a persons identity.
What you do during your holidays
helps you to form your self-identity not because
of what is happening during the vacation but signalling
to other people what kind of person you are.
