Performance management and performance appraisal

"Performance management is about getting better results from the organization, teams and individuals by understanding and managing performance within an agreed framework of planned goals, standards and competing requirements." (Armstrong 2001)

Main instrument: Performance appraisal: ".. the process of evaluating the performance and assessing the development / training needs of an employee" (Heery & Noon)

Positive point of view:

- Internal marketing for company values

- Improvement of performance and increase of motivation

- Identify potential, development needs

- Set objectives

But also critical voices exist:

- Appraisal is a "deadly disease" (Deming),

- a "disgusting habit" (Covey),

- "leaves us distressed when we must take responsibility for judging the personal worth of a fellow man" (McGregor).

Please form two groups and read through the hardcopy provided (Nickson 2007, 169-179).
Group "Pro" has to prepare a positive presentation about appraisal as a form of performance management,

Group "Contra" has to prepare a negative presentation about appraisal as a form of performance management.

Each group has 30 min. for preparation and will give a 5 min. presentation.

Afterwards both groups will have to defend their point of view during a discussion.
