Performance management and performance appraisal
"Performance management is about getting better results from the organization, teams and individuals by understanding and managing performance within an agreed framework of planned goals, standards and competing requirements." (Armstrong 2001)
Main instrument: Performance appraisal: ".. the process of evaluating the performance and assessing the development / training needs of an employee" (Heery & Noon)
Positive point of view: - Internal marketing for company values - Improvement of performance and increase of motivation - Identify potential, development needs - Set objectives
But also critical voices exist: - Appraisal is a "deadly disease" (Deming), - a "disgusting habit" (Covey), - "leaves us distressed when we must take responsibility for judging the personal worth of a fellow man" (McGregor).
