Indicators of Sustainability - Destination21 in Denmark
Elements of Destination21
The initial and an integral element of the Destination 21 scheme is a vision and an action plan for the sustainable development of a destination area. The vision is a broadly formulated description of the ideal scenario that is to be attained, additionally it acts as a common ground of understanding for all concerned stakeholders.The formulation of this vision and action plan must be accomplished with the participation and cooperation of the destination's tourism businesses, tourism organisations, municipality, regional authority, other concerned organisations, as well as the local host population.
Within the Destination 21 framework, particular emphasis is placed upon the development aspect. Apart from meeting a range of basic criteria, which are based upon sustainability indicators, the destination must also expound concrete development goals in order to become certified.
The Destination 21 framework also encompasses a skills and competence development aspect to allow the participating partners to continually develop their ability in the management of the necessary tools. This aspect has been addressed directly by the second sustainability goal, for which indicators as well as possible implementation of initiatives have been suggested by Destination 21.
The Destination 21 recognition label consists of the following elements;
. 8 Sustainability goals
. 37 Sustainability indicators . Base requirements. Development goals
. A recognition logo
