4th Sem. 8083: Soft Skills (PE): Communication Skills
           Tu 15.45-19.00 h, H 01

Brainwriting

Strongly structured form of Brainstorming, also called 6-3-5

n

Basic procedure:

Short introduction of topic with (visualized) question by the facilitator (chairperson)

Then 6 participants write down three ideas which are further developed five times:

A data spreadsheet with three columns and six lines is given to the six participants

Into the first line each participant writes three ideas, one in each column

Then the papers are given to the next person who fills in ideas further developing the basic ideas from the first line

In the end 108 (6x3x6) are recorded

Taking up and expending ideas of other participants possible and welcome

Answer are given in writing

Facilitator (chairperson) organizes the procedure

After end of paper shuffling all columns are read out and written on screen or board and discussed one by one, maybe using another communication technique for the discussion (like Six Hats or Metaplan)

Further rules

Duration for each round about 2 minutes, so altogether including introduction about 15 minutes plus discussion time

During brainwriting NO discussion

All participants must fill out all parts of the sheets

All ideas must be developed positively within the column

During writing onto board/screen clearing up of unclear entries

Some hints:

Start with rather general idea

Try to thing positively even about ideas you disagree with

Brainwriting: Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

- minimal methodological preparation needed

- many ideas in short time

- helping each others ideas

- positive thinking

Disadvantages

- only works for small groups / subgroups

- sometimes difficult not to make immediate judgement on ideas mentioned

- connections between ideas in separate columns not easy to make/see

- individualized process, no group feeling or enthusiasm developing when "filling out forms"

- no anonymity

  Variations

Adaptable to four to eight participants and two to four ideas per sheet.

Try it out: Form two groups (6(+1) each group), discuss for five minutes a suitable topic (simple question, directed into the future), prepare sheets, do in parallel a 15 minutes brainwriting (collecting ideas), do one group after the other a discussion of selected columns
