Brainwriting Strongly structured form of Brainstorming, also called 6-3-5
n Basic procedure:
Short introduction of topic with (visualized) question by the facilitator (chairperson) Then 6 participants write down three ideas which are further developed five times: A data spreadsheet with three columns and six lines is given to the six participants Into the first line each participant writes three ideas, one in each column Then the papers are given to the next person who fills in ideas further developing the basic ideas from the first line In the end 108 (6x3x6) are recorded Taking up and expending ideas of other participants possible and welcome
Answer are given in writing Facilitator (chairperson) organizes the procedure After end of paper shuffling all columns are read out and written on screen or board and discussed one by one, maybe using another communication technique for the discussion (like Six Hats or Metaplan)
Further rules Duration for each round about 2 minutes, so altogether including introduction about 15 minutes plus discussion time During brainwriting NO discussion All participants must fill out all parts of the sheets All ideas must be developed positively within the column During writing onto board/screen clearing up of unclear entries
Some hints: Start with rather general idea Try to thing positively even about ideas you disagree with
Brainwriting: Advantages and Disadvantages
Variations Adaptable to four to eight participants and two to four ideas per sheet.
Try it out: Form two groups (6(+1) each group), discuss for five minutes a suitable topic (simple question, directed into the future), prepare sheets, do in parallel a 15 minutes brainwriting (collecting ideas), do one group after the other a discussion of selected columns
